I'm able to cast a variety of spells whereas the Upgrade is more of a singular attack that can be charged to unless a more powerful attack. They also can use a secondary attack with theirs. For example, David was able to throw circular saw blades via Venus Upgrade as a secondary attack while the primary is a bolt of energy that can be charged into an energy/laser beam.
