#316: “Suburban Senshi on the PGSM Parody Sub Take 2”

*** Now talking in #suburbansenshi
*** Topic is '-= Deny all Knowledge =-'
<--=[ SpeedRcrX ]=--> So, lurking through alt.fan.sailor-moon I'm seeing all kinds of [BLEEP] lately
<--=[ SpeedRcrX ]=--> Like how you're "not a true Sailor Moon fan" if you defend the parody subs
<--=[ SpeedRcrX ]=--> or how the parody subs are no big deal and we should get over it
<// J_Daito //> I thought PGSM was verboten
<--=[ SpeedRcrX ]=--> it's the giant pink elephant sitting in the corner of the room, how can I ignore it
<--=[ SpeedRcrX ]=--> here's my take on this [BLEEP]
<// J_Daito //> Because you've just gotta let yer opinion be known
<--=[ SpeedRcrX ]=--> when the thing was first subbed AFAIK NO ONE knew this was a parody save the parodier
<--=[ SpeedRcrX ]=--> I'm willing to bet the mention of hte parody on this blog as it was brought to our attention was one of the first mentions ANYWHERE
<// J_Daito //> Yeah, and we were all caught off guard by the information
<// J_Daito //> As you can tell by scrolling down
<FireFly_9> The *ahem* "unidentified source" who sent us the pics was quite taken aback upon seeing the tentacle rape translation almost by chance, and then seeing the parodized transformation translation.
<--=[ SpeedRcrX ]=--> See, if it was JUST the commericals no one might have given a [BLEEP] really, DBZ fansubs have had jokes in the commercials forever
<--=[ SpeedRcrX ]=--> But for all intents and purposes this was being passed off FROM THE START as the real deal
<--=[ SpeedRcrX ]=--> So there were certain things you expect to see and certain things you don't
<--=[ SpeedRcrX ]=--> Moreover, and let's be blunt
<// J_Daito //> Because you always are
<--=[ SpeedRcrX ]=--> WHO THE [BLEEP] makes a "partial" parody fansub? That's bull[BLEEP] after the fact cover your ass maneuver crap. If it was supposed to be a paordy it would have flat out stated it somewhere in the subs. It was only AFTER people started to complain that this partial parody excuse came out
<--=[ SpeedRcrX ]=--> If you're gonna parody, you're not gonna sub 90% of it correct and just alter 2 lines. You're gonna mock the whole damn thing from stem to stern
<// J_Daito //> Like in the commericals
<--=[ SpeedRcrX ]=--> Yeah. So it seems to me whoever helped release this was asleep at the damn switch and got caught with their pants down and is now trying to cover for it
<--=[ SpeedRcrX ]=--> And dividing the Sailor Moom fanbase in the process
<// J_Daito //> Sailor Moon fans aren't "true" or "not true" because they like or dislike a set of subtitles-- they just can either live with crap being loaded in with the subs or not
<--=[ SpeedRcrX ]=--> I just don't get the "we should put up with whatever they feed us" sympathizer rationale though... people who put crap like this out should be chastised.
<// J_Daito //> ADV caught tons of flack for releasing a less than perfect product, and this "parody" is in reality just some perverted sentences tacked onto an otherwise decent release
<FireFly_9> *ahem* So we've heard.
<// J_Daito //> Right
<--=[ SpeedRcrX ]=--> Look our opinion is this:
<// J_Daito //> *Your* opinion
<--=[ SpeedRcrX ]=--> back my [BLEEP]up ok?
<// J_Daito //> yeah yeah fine whatever
<--=[ SpeedRcrX ]=--> You wanna call it a parody? Then everything should have been made fun of. The commercials were definitely parodies and I can accept them as such. I don't give a [BLEEP] about the commercials. I give a [BLEEP] about the fact that an important scene *in the show proper* was [BLEEP]ed with, and the intro song had a very nasty reference stuck in it that people were not adequately warned about
<--=[ SpeedRcrX ]=--> I mean imagine some kid, new to the whole scene, knows like 2% about Sailormoon, manages to hunt down this "Live Action Episode 1 subbed" and pops it in
<--=[ SpeedRcrX ]=--> Kid DOESN'T KNOW Japanese, is not a super hardcore otaku, just wants to see what this is all about and watches in wide-eyed amazement
<// J_Daito //> Then her eyes go REAL wide if she catches the line in the opening credits
<--=[ SpeedRcrX ]=--> Our source almost missed it the first time out
<FireFly_9> I think he did a "spit take"
<--=[ SpeedRcrX ]=--> He did a "WTF.com.com" take, AFAIK
<--=[ SpeedRcrX ]=--> I mean it's like opening up a sub of Kodocha for the first time and seeing Sagami Rei pontificate on hentai pr0n
<// J_Daito //> It's just not cricket
<--=[ SpeedRcrX ]=--> So I don't buy this "partial parody sub" crap. Like I said, it was a stupid attempt to stick jokes in where they didn't belong, and now someone is trying to cover their [BLEEP] about it
<// J_Daito //> I mean if it didn't violate the rules we have to work under, we'd SHOW YOU what a real parody would look like.
<--=[ SpeedRcrX ]=--> Just think one of our MiSTs on crack every line... that's what a true "parody" would be
<// J_Daito //> But what they did was like quoting Hamlet verbatim and then just changing the line "to be or not to be" to "to suck [BLEEP] or not to suck [BLEEP]" and trying to pass it off as a parody
<// J_Daito //> Just as jarring, and just as inappropriate
<--=[ SpeedRcrX ]=--> I would have put this on AFSM but I somehow doubt anyone actually really cares, they're having too much fun ripping into each other over what should be a fairly simple situation
<FireFly_9> This has been our two cents on the matter.

At least I appear to be a 133t one...

Not "they" as in the releasers, but a lot of people on their side are suddenly coming out saying it was "Always" labeled a parody sub and as such the two most offensive (in terms of placement) lines should be justified.

I'm saying, from what I know, it was NOT labeled as a parody when it was set loose in the wild, and this new defense is a bit ex post facto. Also, 2 lines does not a parody make. There's plenty of stuff in there to mock if someone was really interested in making a parody. This was just some ass being stupid and now his defenders are trying to make it all better by claiming parody.

Those Realtext subtitle parodies for the R episodes (they came out years ago), and one of Stars-- THOSE are parody subs. This was just a jerk

Dr. X • 10/12/03 12:23am

I assumed that they did it purposely to be asses and get attention... they're trying to say it was a legit parody sub and defend themselves from a moral standpoint?
