[10:55] <Mizunomics01> Each escalator step rides on four rollers which have urethane "tires" bonded on, much like skateboard wheels. Over time, these tires break down and fall off, leaving the step to roll on the metal wheel the tire was bonded to. You really don't know it's gone when you're descending, but when the step flattens out at the end, it's about a half-inch lower, and the step has dropped beneath the meshing comb teeth, creating a gap. This gap is what gets you, entrapping shoes, sandals, toes, or fingers if you are foolish enough to put them down there. The step running behind is higher than the one you're on, and pushes the shoe/foot in with force, and the painful amputation ensues. Escalators have strong motors to carry the weight of people, and that force will amputate anything.

She put her fingers along the edge of the step on the side, and got her fingers amputated between the step and the stainless sideplate.
