Suburban Senshi iChat #1320: “Down to the Wire”
#1320: “Down to the Wire”

 Mon Mar 10 17:40 2008 - Logging Started (suburbansenshi-chat)

[17:41] <@Dr. Xadium> Of general interest to (someone?) I've written a Review of the Series Finale of the Wire.
[17:42] <@Dr. Xadium> (There are some spoilers) I heartily recommend this show to anyone looking for quality television.
[17:46] <=^catablanca^=> You know they say having a pet cat cuts your risk of heart attack by 1/3rd
[17:47] <[gTV]C'est_la_V> Only if you don't own fragile collectibles
[17:47] <=^catablanca^=> What's that supposed to mean!?
[17:47] <[gTV]C'est_la_V> HOW MANY of my garage kits have you knocked over leaping onto shelves?!
[17:47] <=^catablanca^=>
[17:48] <=^catablanca^=> you didn't fix them to their bases properly!
[17:48] <[gTV]C'est_la_V> OH COME ON!!!
[20:49] <@Dr. Xadium> In Memory of Jimmy McNulty and The Wire, Jay Landsman's Eulogy~

Dr. Xadium pasted:
He was the black sheep, a permanent pariah. He asked no quarter of the bosses and none was given. He learned no lessons; he acknowledged no mistakes; he was as stubborn a Mick as ever stumbled out of the Northeast parish just to take up a patrolman's shield. He brooked no authority. He did what he wanted to do and he said what he wanted to say, and in the end he gave me the clearances. He was natural police. And I don't say that about many people, even when they're here on the felt. I don't say that often unless it happens to be true. Nat'ral po-lice. But Christ, what an a[BLEEP]le. And I'm not talking about the ordinary gaping orifice that all of us possess. I mean an all-encompassing, all-consuming, out-of-proportion-to-every-other-facet-of-his-humanity chasm — if I may quote Shakespeare — "from whose bourn no traveler has ever returned." He gave us thirteen years on the line. Not enough for a pension. But enough to know that he was, despite his negligible Irish ancestry, his defects of personality, and his inconstant sobriety and hygiene, a true murder police. Jimmy, I say this seriously. If I was laying there dead on some Baltimore street corner, I'd want it to be you standing over me catchin' the case. Because brother, when you were good, you were the best we had.
[21:15] <@Dr. Xadium> The New Yorker's Coverage of the Finale
[22:01] <FireFly_9> Part of what gave the show its charm was its underpinning in greek tragedy. As its creator said, "But instead of the old gods, The Wire is a Greek tragedy in which the postmodern institutions are the Olympian forces. It’s the police department, or the drug economy, or the political structures, or the school administration, or the macroeconomic forces that are throwing the lightning bolts and hitting people in the ass for no decent reason. In much of television, and in a good deal of our stage drama, individuals are often portrayed as rising above institutions to achieve catharsis. In this drama, the institutions always prove larger, and those characters with hubris enough to challenge the postmodern construct of American empire are invariably mocked, marginalized, or crushed."
[23:17] <@Dr. Xadium> Another Great interveiew covering the finale.
[00:39] <[gTV]Karasuma_Akane> Well to wrap this up, given that I loved the whole focus on Newspapers that was season 5 of the Wire, here's another site that makes me do the unthinkable and smile: Angry Journalist. Kind of like grouphug.us but for angry Journalism types.
[00:41] <[gTV]Karasuma_Akane> And I'm gonna take this space to promote Ginga's new Desu-Matic! again. Post your Japan-related links and vote on the stories that are already there! It's your anime News source that YOU control.
[00:41] <@SpeedRcrX> LOL my site will always pwn your site
[00:41] <[gTV]Karasuma_Akane> Hardly
[00:41] <@SpeedRcrX> I've had this blog for over five years.

[00:42] <@SpeedRcrX> Oh yeah, oh yeah? you wanna make this some Animamate vs. Outer Senshi thing because I WILL PWN you
[00:42] <[gTV]Karasuma_Akane> In your dreams
[00:43] <@SpeedRcrX> LOL maybe I should go over there and commentspam the s[BLEEP]t out of you
[00:43] <[gTV]Karasuma_Akane> I can ban you from there

I actually had heard very little of The Wire until it was mentioned here. I take it then that it is a pretty good show then heh.
